LaGuardia Community College Healthcare Finance & Operations Training Program

Key Takeaways:

Program Highlights

  • No-Cost Training: The program is grant-funded and available to eligible New York City residents with limited incomes.
  • Career-Ready Skills: Students gain hands-on knowledge in healthcare finance, billing, and customer service to prepare for roles like Revenue Cycle Specialist or Billing Coordinator.
  • Flexible Schedule: Classes are held in the evenings, with a hybrid format of online and in-person sessions.

Program Overview

This program focuses on key areas of healthcare administration, including the U.S. healthcare system, electronic health records, medical billing, and healthcare accounting. Students will also receive training in business communication and job readiness, ensuring they are prepared for real-world job expectations. Upon completion, participants earn a certificate of completion and may interview with one of the program’s hospital partners.

Graduates can also earn nine college credits toward an associate degree in Business Administration with a Healthcare Management focus at LaGuardia Community College. However, the program does not prepare students for a national certification in medical billing or coding.

Prerequisites

Eligible applicants must meet the following requirements:

  • Be at least 18 years old.
  • Reside in one of NYC’s five boroughs.
  • Earn an individual income of $30,000 or less annually.
  • Hold a high school diploma or equivalent.
  • Be fluent in English.
  • Commit to attending evening classes and participate fully in the six-month program.

Recruitment Process

The program’s application process involves five steps:

  1. Attend an information session to learn about the program and complete an initial application.
  2. Pass basic skills tests.
  3. Participate in a one-on-one interview.
  4. Join a panel interview with program administrators.
  5. Complete a four-week probationary period of coursework.

Students who successfully complete these steps will be enrolled in the full program.

Program Details

Classes are held primarily in the evenings, Monday through Thursday from 6 PM to 9 PM, with occasional Friday sessions. A hybrid model combines online and in-person learning, offering flexibility for students. Participants should plan to spend an additional 10–20 hours per week on assignments and studying.
