Brooklyn Medical Billing and Coding Programs

The Medical Billing and Coding program at SUNY Downstate Health Sciences University is a two-semester certificate program that prepares students for careers in medical billing and coding. Tuition is $3,500, with a $30 registration fee. Students can pay per course or set up a payment plan. Classes are offered part-time during evenings and weekends, with real-time virtual sessions beginning in the fall and asynchronous online class sessions starting in January.

The program covers essential topics such as medical terminology, anatomy and physiology, pathophysiology, pharmacology, coding systems (ICD-10/11, CPT, HCPCS), and health insurance reimbursement. Students learn practical skills through hands-on exercises with medical management software and case studies. Successful completion requires a grade of “C” or better in all exams and at least 80% attendance.

Graduates are eligible to take certification exams from AHIMA and AAPC, including the Certified Professional Coder (CPC®) and Certified Coding Specialist (CCS®). An optional six-week summer immersion program offers advanced coding classes to enhance certification preparation. Internship opportunities are available through partnerships with the university’s Health Information Management Department, providing real-world experience.

Applicants must have a high school diploma or equivalent, basic computer skills, and proficiency in English.

The Medical Billing and Coding program at Kingsborough Community College provides 182 hours of instruction for $1,200 in tuition, plus a $25 registration fee. Additional costs include $434.25 for textbooks and a $125 exam fee. Classes focus on medical terminology, anatomy, health insurance processes, and systematic coding for outpatient settings.

Students gain practical skills in medical billing, scheduling, patient charting, and accounting, using modern medical software. The program covers ICD-10-CM, CPT, and HCPCS coding systems and prepares students to sit for the Certified Billing and Coding Specialist (CBCS) exam offered by the National Healthcareer Association (NHA). Graduates can also pursue certifications from AAPC or AHIMA.

Applicants must have a high school diploma or equivalent. Certification readiness is supported through hands-on practice, access to study materials, and the option to choose a professional certification voucher aligned with career goals.

Brooklyn Public Library, in partnership with SUNY Brooklyn Educational Opportunity Center, offers a funded 15-week Medical Billing & E-Records Certification program. Classes are conducted online, requiring participants to dedicate 19 hours weekly for a total of 285 hours. The program prepares students for national certifications, including the Certified Billing & Coding Specialist (CBCS) and Certified Electronic Health Records Specialist (CEHRS). Job placement assistance is provided, and eligible participants may receive reimbursement for one certification exam.

Classes focus on medical billing software, electronic health records, and preparing for certification exams. Sessions are virtual and include extensive hands-on computer work. Applicants must be at least 18 years old, U.S. citizens or residents, and meet minimum placement test requirements. Priority is given to students working toward their HSE diploma or enrolled in ESL classes at BPL.

The program runs twice annually, with spring and fall cohorts. For Spring 2024, classes will take place February through May. Interested participants must attend an information session and complete an assessment to qualify for enrollment.

The Jewish Community House of Bensonhurst offers a funded 18-week Medical Billing and Coding program for participants enrolled in its ESOL program at Level 3 or higher. Classes are held in person three times a week from June to September at the Brooklyn location, totaling 72 hours of instruction. Participants will earn two certificates upon completion.

The program includes Medical Terminology classes on Mondays and Wednesdays from 9:00 AM to 12:00 PM, and Medical Billing classes on Wednesdays from 2:00 PM to 5:00 PM. Instruction covers medical terminology, human anatomy, and professional medical communication. Students also learn to interpret medical billing codes, process medical claims for reimbursement, and navigate medical insurance systems.
